15 Sourdough Bread Toppings | Gardenuity

Baking sourdough bread has been one of the hottest trends during this year’s spring and summer seasons. With extra time at home comes the time to hone your sourdough recipe to perfection. Once your bread is baked, how are you eating it?

This week we’re bringing you our top 15 delicious sourdough bread topping ideas!

1. Butter

Who doesn’t love a classic? Enjoy melted butter on your bed fresh out of the oven, or enjoy it cold too. If you want to add a special touch, try adding some sea salt on top. You won’t be sorry.

2. Fresh Jam or Jelly

Summer is the perfect time to start working on your jam and jelly recipes. What better a match than to pair it with your fresh sourdough bread! Get your hands on some peaches, berries or plums to make a delicious spread to top your sourdough.

3. Basil, Mozzarella & Tomato

If you love Caprese, you will love topping your sourdough with fresh basil, tomato and mozzarella. If you’re looking for a classic take on the recipe, add some olive oil and sea salt. Bonus points if you’re pulling the basil and tomato from your garden! Check out our garden kits to get started on growing your own today.

4. Avocado

Avocado toast is all the rage in today’s hot food trends. You can get creative and add chili flakes and honey, for a sweet and spicy flare. Or you can stick to the classic sliced avocado with sea salt and pepper sprinkled on top. Either way, avocado is a terrific addition to your fresh sourdough.

5. Mushrooms with Caramelized Onions

If you crave a savory, warm snack, you will love the addition of fresh mushrooms and caramelized onions to your sourdough bread. Brown the mushrooms in a pan, remove the mushrooms and then add your sliced onion. Caramelize the onions with 1-2 teaspoons of sugar and 2 teaspoons of water. Keep them in the pan for about 5 minutes and then add them to your mushrooms. Voila!

6. Hummus

Hummus is a great source of protein and it’s also a delicious topping to your fresh sourdough. One way to enjoy hummus on your bread is to top it with fresh, sliced avocado, some fresh red pepper slices and a sprinkle of cayenne pepper.

7. Peanut Butter / Savory Spread

Peanut butter is another classic that you can’t go wrong with on your sourdough. If you have allergies to nuts, try sunflower seed butter! Make your snack extra comforting by lightly toasting your bread before spreading the peanut butter.

8. Greek Sourdough Bread Topping

We loved this Greek Sourdough Topping Recipe from Food.com. If you are growing cucumbers and tomatoes in your garden, this is the perfect recipe to make to match your sourdough. You’ll also need dill, capers, olive oil, red wine vinegar and sea salt.

9. Garlic & Shiitake Mushroom

A simple, but still wonderful option for topping off your bread is a garlic and shiitake mushroom saute! Mix up your ingredients in a pan with some olive oil, salt and pepper, spread them on your toast, and enjoy.

10. Eggs

Eggs and toast are a timeless breakfast staple. Luckily for us, eggs can be enjoyed at any time of the day, and they are always delicious with sourdough bread. Try adding your egg sunny side up with some butter and bacon to your fresh sourdough for a delicious, open-faced breakfast sandwich.

11. Lox

Who says you need a bagel to make a fantastic Lox dish?

Complete this topping with some fresh cream cheese, sliced smoked salmon, capers, and red onions. If you are feeling fancy, add some sliced fresh tomatoes from your garden and top it all off with a sprinkle of salt.

12. Nut Butter, Banana & Blueberries

We are bringing back another classic: the Peanut Butter and Banana sandwich. This time around, we are using fresh sourdough bread and spreading it with your choice of nut butter (or sunflower seed butter). Finish up this summer time favorite with slices of fresh banana and a handful of blueberries.

13. Chorizo

Chorizo is a wonderful topper for your sourdough bread; chorizo is packed with flavor, so you don’t need to do much to make your snack taste delicious. Try adding your chorizo, or veggie chorizo, to your toast with a mushroom saute and some sea salt.

14. Fig & Ricotta

Find a fresh fig and some ricotta cheese to make your sweet and savory toast dreams come true. Try toasting your sourdough and adding a drizzle of honey overtop of your creation to highlight the sweet flavor of the fig.

15. Greek Yogurt & Fresh Berries

This sourdough bread topping makes for a great breakfast carb, try adding a bit of greek yogurt and your favorite assortment of berries as a topper. Another sweet and savory favorite, this healthy and fresh snack is a fantastic way to start off your day.
