March 8 marks International Women’s Day, a day to celebrate the resilience, courage, and unwavering strength of women everywhere. Strength comes in many forms—some bold and fierce, others quiet and deeply rooted, like the plants in a thriving garden. Just as deep roots provide stability and nourishment, the challenges we face shape us, making us stronger, wiser, and more resilient.
Women have always been the architects of growth, both in nature and in life. They cultivate communities, build businesses, nurture families, and create opportunities where none existed before. As Eleanor Roosevelt said, “A woman is like a tea bag—you never know how strong she is until she gets in hot water.”
I grew up moving around—Alaska, Singapore, London, to name a few places. Every time we moved, my mother, Nancy Spafford, who had never left Texas prior to marrying my dad, created a home for us quickly. We always felt rooted, wherever we lived. As a child, I didn’t fully recognize how hard this was for her, and I am confident I never said thank you. But looking back, I see my mom’s fierce protection and ability to create a home that let us be inspired by our surroundings and grow quickly. Her quiet strength is something I admire now more than ever.
Another story that comes to mind is about Kelly Waterman, the mother of two beautiful children, one of whom has Down syndrome. Kelly fiercely fights for the rights of her daughter, Happy, and her peers. She advocates tirelessly for their health, education, and opportunities, all while bringing immense joy and unwavering support to her friends. Her passion and tenacity are a reminder that strength is often found in fighting for others.
Then there is Madison, my daughter. As the older sister to Jillian, who is non-ambulatory and non-verbal, Madison has shown me that taking a back seat has its advantages. Growing up, and even today, so much of our world is focused on Jillian, and yet Madison has made her role of support look easy. She has taught me that strength isn’t just about standing in the spotlight; it’s also about lifting others up quietly and selflessly. My guess is that the extraordinary women we celebrate today as leaders are quietly supported by other women—women who should be recognized and honored as well.
This International Women’s Day, let’s plant seeds of growth, gratitude, and strength—literally and figuratively. Consider starting your own tea garden, filled with herbs that represent resilience, healing, and wisdom. Brew a cup, reflect on the women who have influenced your journey, and share a moment of appreciation for the strength that unites us all.
And while today is about honoring women, it’s also a reminder that behind many strong women are champions who support them—mentors, fathers, brothers, partners, and friends. I am grateful for those, like Scott Letier, who have consistently encouraged women to grow, lead, and thrive.
Some herbs grow quickly and spread wildly, while others take time to establish deep, unshakable roots. The same is true of the women who shape our world. A thriving tea garden is a testament to patience, nurturing, and perseverance.
Peppermint—bold, refreshing, and unrelenting, much like the voices of women who break barriers and challenge norms.
Sage—rich in wisdom and grounding, reminding us of the deep knowledge passed down from one generation of women to the next.
Lemon Balm—gentle yet powerful, bringing calm in the face of adversity and healing in times of hardship.
Ginger—spicy, invigorating, and full of energy, just like the women who push forward, innovate and lead with passion.
Chamomile—soothing and nurturing, representing the quiet strength of women who provide comfort and support.
Lavender—calming and balancing, symbolizing grace under pressure and resilience through challenges.
Rosemary—a symbol of remembrance and strength, honoring the wisdom of women who came before us.
As you cultivate your tea garden, take the opportunity to schedule a Zoom call with a woman you admire. Share stories, exchange wisdom, and celebrate the collective strength of women. A simple conversation can be as nourishing as a warm cup of tea, bringing comfort, insight, and inspiration.
Because when women grow, the world grows with us.
Happy International Women’s Day.
