From Rooftop to Backyard — Grow What You Love to Eat
Whether you’re gardening on a rooftop, patio, porch, or backyard, growing your own pizza garden is the perfect way to enjoy the season, connect with your food, and add fresh flavor to every slice. Here’s how to plant one—and why it’s more popular than ever.
A pizza garden is a curated collection of plants that includes everything you need to top your favorite slice—think tomatoes, oregano, basil, peppers, and even garlic chives. It’s easy to grow in a single grow bag or patio container, and it makes gardening approachable (and delicious) for everyone.
Tips for a successful Pizza Party- We asked Donna and some of our friends their top tips for hosting a memorable Patio Pizza Party-
1. Set the Scene with Effortless Elegance
“Good design is in the details.”
Create a welcoming outdoor space with layered textures—linen napkins, wooden boards, terra-cotta planters (well…you might swap those!), and string lights overhead. Use herbs like basil and rosemary as table décor, center pieces, and natural aromatherapy.
2. Pre-Prep Your Pizza Bar
“Organize in advance so you can enjoy the party, too.”
Set up a DIY pizza station with pre-rolled dough, sauce options (think classic red, pesto, white), and bowls of toppings—especially fresh-picked garden ingredients. Offer curated pairings like mozzarella + basil + tomato or arugula + prosciutto + lemon zest.
3. Fresh from the Garden, Straight to the Slice
“What you grow is what you serve.”
Encourage guests to snip herbs from your pizza garden and add them to their pizzas. It’s interactive, fun, and makes the food taste even better.
4. Fire It Up
“Wood-fired ovens are fabulous, but a grill will do just fine.”
Use a pizza stone on the grill or oven for a crisp crust. If you have a portable pizza oven, even better. Keep your cooking station clean and hot.
5. Pair Thoughtfully
“Every meal is elevated by the perfect beverage.”
Serve seasonal drinks like sparkling basil lemonade, garden sangria, or Aperol spritzes with herb garnishes. Offer citrus or cucumber-infused water for a non-alcoholic option.
