The journey of an amaryllis begins long before a bulb is ready to be harvested.
It starts with breeding.
Growers spend years developing and selecting amaryllis varieties for characteristics that matter—from the health, size, color and strength of the bulb to the beauty and performance of the eventual bloom.
Only then does the growing journey begin.
Bulbs are planted and carefully tended through multiple growing seasons. As they mature, they’re lifted from the earth and replanted into new growing areas, giving them continued access to the soil, space and nutrients they need.
And then it happens again.
And again.
For three years or more, our largest amaryllis bulbs may be planted, tended, lifted and replanted as they mature. All be hand all by people who care about the bulbs and the land.
Think about that for a moment.
Years of tending before a single bloom.
Growing Can’t Be Rushed
We live in a world that celebrates speed.
Faster delivery. Faster answers. Faster results.
And believe us, we appreciate all of those things.
But plants don’t operate that way.
Nature has its own timeline.
You can’t rush a bulb into maturity. You can’t skip a growing season. You can’t manufacture the years of sunlight, nutrients, tending and patience stored inside a mature bulb.
You have to give it what it needs.
And then you have to give it time.
Maybe that’s one of the reasons we find amaryllis so compelling.
They’re a beautiful reminder that some things become extraordinary precisely because they have been tended quietly for years.
Harvest Isn’t the End
When an amaryllis bulb finally reaches maturity, another remarkably hands-on process begins.
The bulbs are carefully harvested from the earth.
Then, one by one, they are sized, brushed, washed and trimmed.
One bulb. One set of hands. Then another.
Next comes the important chilling period that helps prepare the bulbs for their eventual blooming cycle.
And for the bulbs selected for our wax-dipped collections, there is another step: each is individually waxed by hand.
By the time a Gardenuity amaryllis begins its journey to us, human hands have cared for it at nearly every stage of its life.
There is something extraordinary about that in a world where so many things are mass-produced.
Size Isn’t a Quality Grade
Because amaryllis bulbs are living things, every harvest is a little different.
Weather changes.
Growing conditions change.
And individual bulbs grow at their own pace.
That means bulb size naturally varies from season to season and even within the same harvest.
But here’s something we think is important to understand:
Size isn’t a quality grade.
Every Gardenuity amaryllis is selected because it meets our standards for health, quality and blooming performance. Whether a bulb is part of our Classic, Signature or limited Collector’s collection, the standard of care behind it doesn’t change.
Nature isn’t standardized. And that’s part of its beauty.
The Care Continues at Gardenuity
When the bulbs arrive at Gardenuity, their journey isn’t over.
It’s simply our turn to care for them.
We carefully plan our inventory so new bulbs arrive throughout the season rather than receiving everything at once. Approximately every two weeks, another shipment reaches us.
Our team carefully receives and inspects the bulbs before placing them into temperature-controlled chilling conditions, where they remain until they’re ready to be prepared for the next part of their journey.
We don’t rush them simply because they’ve arrived.
We want each bulb to remain in the conditions it needs until the right moment—when it is selected, prepared and carefully packed to make its way to you or to someone you’ve chosen to surprise.
After years of growing and so many hands caring for a bulb before it reaches us, we take our part of the journey seriously.

- Someone tended it through multiple growing seasons.

And then it’s our turn to care for it. Until finally, it’s yours.
The Story Behind the Amaryllis
Perhaps it’s fitting that even the folklore surrounding the amaryllis is a story about patience and determination.
Legend tells of a young woman named Amaryllis who fell in love with a shepherd who treasured beautiful flowers. Determined to win his heart, she visited his door for 30 days, and from her devotion a magnificent crimson flower eventually appeared.
The story has been told in different ways over generations, but the symbolism has endured. The amaryllis has come to represent strength, determination, beauty and love. Knowing how much patience goes into growing one, that symbolism feels especially fitting.
And Then, It Blooms
Eventually, after years of growing, tending and care, one of those bulbs makes its way to you.
Perhaps you chose it for your holiday table.
Perhaps someone sent it to say thank you.
Maybe it arrived from an employer who wanted you to know you were appreciated, or from a friend who simply wanted to send a little joy. You probably won’t see the years that came before it. You won’t see the growing seasons.
