Heavy Metal Detox Smoothie Recipe

We might not feel like cyborgs, but did you know that we are full of metal?

That’s right: items that we come into contact with each day, such as aluminum cans and foil, batteries, cookware and even food treated with pesticides contain some heavy metals. While dangerous levels of heavy metal poisoning is rare in the United States, the traces we ingest can accumulate over time and lead to inflammation. 

If the idea of decades-old heavy metals lurking in your system gives you pause, don’t worry, we’ve got you covered. Adding certain foods to your regular diet can help draw out toxins and reduce inflammation over time. While some ingredients may seem foreign (spirulina, barley grass juice powder, and Atlantic dulse are not necessarily pantry staples), some, such as blueberries and cilantro, are easily accessible and can even be grown at home.

This smoothie recipe, one of our favorites, is an amazing way to introduce heavy metal-reducing foods into your morning routine. 

HELPFUL TIPS

  1. Get a good blender. As with all smoothie recipes, the blender greatly affects the final product. A higher quality machine will produce smooth, well-combined results.
  2. Adjust accordingly. Some of these ingredients have better taste reputations than others (looking at you, spirulina). If one food is more to your preference than others, feel free to adjust the quantity to fit your palette. It’s better to get a small amount of something in your system than none at all.
  3. Make it frosty. The recipe doesn’t call for ice, but you can absolutely add it if you like your smoothies extra cold. Freezing your bananas also helps chill things out.
  4. Drink up. You’ll want to enjoy this smoothie pretty soon after it’s been made for optimal flavor.

This Heavy Metal Detox Smoothie is a healthy easy to make snack! Recipe from Medical Medium

Ingredients

  • 2 bananas

  • 2 cups wild blueberries

  • 1 cup cilantro

  • 1 tsp barley grass juice powder

  • 1 tsp spirulina

  • 1 cup orange juice

  • 1 small handful Atlantic dulse and fresh mint leaves to taste

  • Optional: water, coconut water or additional orange juice to blend. 

Directions

  • Combine all ingredients into a blender. Blend on high until well combined and very smooth. If you like your smoothies on the thinner side, add additional liquid until desired consistency is reached.
