If you’ve ever compared two amaryllis bulbs, you may have noticed something: they aren’t always the same size. That’s not a flaw. That’s nature. Every growing season is different. Sunlight, temperature, soil conditions, moisture and time all influence what eventually comes out of the earth at harvest. Because when you’re choosing an amaryllis, you’re not really choosing a circumference.

You’re choosing an experience.

First, What Does Amaryllis Bulb Size Mean?

Amaryllis bulbs are typically measured by circumference in centimeters.

That measurement gives growers and gardeners a way to describe the maturity and size of a bulb. Larger, more mature bulbs generally have greater stored reserves and may have the potential to support additional flower stalks or blooms.  Different amaryllis varieties offer different size bulbs. 

But size alone doesn’t tell you whether a bulb is healthy, how many times it will bloom, how beautiful its flowers will be or how much care went into growing it.  Our wax-dipped amaryllis bulbs generally fall into three collections based on what nature provides each growing season.

Amaryllis bulbs are measured by circumference, but that number tells only part of the story.

The size a bulb reaches at harvest is the result of multiple growing seasons and a remarkable combination of genetics, soil, nutrients, sunlight, temperature, rainfall and the care it receives along the way.

Growers can create the right conditions. They can tend the soil, rotate growing areas, lift and replant bulbs and make decisions based on years of experience. But ultimately, nature has a vote. That’s why every harvest is different—and why we think each of our Bloom Collections has a story worth telling.

Classic Bloom | 28–32 cm

The quintessential Gardenuity amaryllis experience.

Our Classic Bloom represents the beautiful heart of an amaryllis harvest: healthy, mature bulbs carefully selected for their quality and blooming performance.

Long before reaching Gardenuity, these bulbs have spent multiple growing seasons in the field, absorbing sunlight and taking in nutrients from the soil. Their leaves spend the growing season doing important work—using photosynthesis to create and store the energy the bulb will eventually need to produce its flowers.

Throughout that journey, growers pay close attention to the conditions around the plants. Soil health, available nutrients, temperature, moisture and rainfall all influence how a living bulb develops from one season to the next.

And because nature doesn’t grow to a specification, no two growing seasons—or two bulbs—are exactly alike.

Classic Blooms give you everything we love about the amaryllis experience: anticipation, growth and extraordinary flowers emerging from what once looked like a beautifully simple bulb. Place it somewhere you can enjoy it. Don’t water it. And watch the magic happen.

Signature Bloom | 32–36 cm

A larger, mature bulb—and a signature Gardenuity favorite.

To reach Signature size, an amaryllis has had the opportunity to develop substantial reserves within the bulb. Those reserves don’t appear overnight. They are accumulated through growing seasons of sunlight, healthy foliage, good soil and careful tending.

As bulbs mature, growers may lift them from the earth and replant them in fresh growing areas. Crop rotation and thoughtful soil management can help maintain healthy growing conditions and give developing bulbs continued access to the nutrients they need.

Then nature adds its part. The amount of sunshine during a growing season matters. Temperature matters. Rainfall and moisture matter. Soil conditions matter. Genetics matter. Season after season, the bulb responds to all of it.

By harvest, a Signature Bloom has reached a circumference of approximately 32–36 cm. Its larger size generally means greater stored reserves, which may give the bulb the potential to support additional flower stalks or blooms.

But we don’t call it Signature because it’s “better” than Classic. We call it Signature because it’s another beautiful expression of what years of growing can produce.

Collector’s Bloom | 36–38 cm

These are the exceptional ones.

Our Collector’s Blooms are the extraordinary extra-large bulbs that only become available when the harvest provides them. A grower can’t simply decide that this year’s field will produce a certain number of 36–38 cm bulbs.

They can provide healthy soil. They can manage nutrients. They can rotate growing areas. They can lift and replant. They can carefully monitor the crop through changing temperatures, rainfall and growing conditions.

And they can give a bulb time. But then nature takes over. For an amaryllis to reach Collector’s size requires the right combination of maturity, genetics, stored energy, growing conditions and years of attentive care.

That’s what makes these bulbs so special. They aren’t manufactured to be extra-large. They’re grown that way. And some years, nature gives us more of them than others.

That’s why Collector’s Blooms are offered only when available. Their scarcity isn’t something we’ve created for marketing purposes—it’s part of working with a living crop.

When a harvest produces these exceptional bulbs, we don’t simply see a larger circumference.

We see the growing seasons behind it.

One of the things you quickly learn when you spend time in a field is that nature has very little interest in standardization. Two bulbs planted at the same time don’t necessarily grow at exactly the same rate.

One may become larger. Another may remain more compact.

One season may produce an abundance of extra-large bulbs. Another may produce fewer.

That’s agriculture.

And we think that’s something worth celebrating rather than hiding.

We live in a world where we’ve become accustomed to products looking exactly the same every time we order them.

Plants aren’t products coming off an assembly line.

They’re alive.

The differences are part of the story.

Every Gardenuity Amaryllis Receives the Same Care

Long before we categorize a bulb as Classic, Signature or Collector’s, years of care have already gone into growing it.

Bulbs are planted and tended in the fields. As they mature, they’re lifted and replanted into new growing areas so they can continue taking in the nutrients they need.

At harvest, bulbs are carefully lifted from the earth.

One by one, they’re sized, brushed, washed and trimmed before being chilled and prepared for the next part of their journey.

When they arrive at Gardenuity, that care continues.

Our team carefully receives and inspects new shipments throughout the season, and the bulbs remain in temperature-controlled chilling conditions until they’re ready to be prepared and sent to you.

Classic, Signature or Collector’s—the standard of care doesn’t change.
