“WHAT WE APPRECIATE, APPRECIATES.” I am not sure where the quote originated, but it is now one of my favorites.
Read it again.
“What we appreciate, appreciates”.
This simple quote really has me thinking about the many things I appreciate about my life, and I bet my list is not unlike others. I appreciate God, family, my marriage, my kids, Julie (the smartest business partner ever), my friends, my home, and my experiences in life, but so much of who I am is a result of being an American.
We live in a country that affords us the opportunity to be free, to make choices, to be heard, and to pursue happiness- the list goes on. Living in America is not something we should take for granted or ever leave off our list of what we most appreciate. And while I think about what I appreciate about America, it begs the question does she, America, appreciate me? Am I actively doing something that she is proud of?
Merriam-Webster dictionary defines appreciate first as a verb – to grasp the nature, worth, quality, or significance of. To value or admire highly. To recognize with gratitude.
July 4th is our holiday to say thank you to our America and to those Americans who protect the freedoms we all love. It is our day to show appreciation. Appreciation for her capacity for adjustment and renewal and her ability to reset the refresh button when needed.
So on this birthday celebration for America, I hope we all find time to appreciate her presence, beauty, diversity, and the opportunities she affords us, and let’s see if we can look back in a year and say that which we actively appreciated, appreciated us this year.
May your July 4th celebration be full of fun, family, faith and appreciation.
