4 Reasons Marigolds are Your Veggie Garden’s BFF

Marigolds + vegetables are BFFs — a true match made in paradise. Despite marigolds’ dainty and vibrant aesthetic, these flowers are absolute powerhouses in a veggie garden.

Here are 4 incredibly important ways marigolds’ will benefit your vegetable garden.

1. 100% Natural Insect Repellent

It’s hard for us to imagine, but pests avoid marigolds like the plague. Whiteflies, mosquitoes, aphids, and wild rabbits all despise marigolds. The flower also naturally repels nematodes (microscopic worms that attack the roots of plants) thanks to a substance called alpha terthienyl.

On top of it all, marigolds’ strong scent often masks the scent of the veggies, so insects can’t even tell their favorite food is nearby. In other words, marigolds are the most natural insect repellent you can use for your veggies.

2. Tomatoes’ Favorite Sidekick

If marigolds and veggies are BFFs, then marigolds and tomatoes are BFFL. Marigolds repel many of the pests particularly drawn to tomatoes, including tomato hornworms.

Plus, the color contrast between the plants is exceptionally beautiful.

Other wonderful companions for marigolds: bush beans, Chinese cabbage, broccoli, squash, eggplant, and kale.

3. Pollination Station

All plants need bees to survive because all plants depend on pollination. Marigolds are incredibly good at attracting bees.

Once that first connection is made, the bees will hop to all the plants in your garden — and your veggies will thank you for it.

4. Aesthetic Appeal

Look, we love how veggies look. But sometimes it can appear a little…green. Marigolds add vibrant, playful color, wonderful unique texture, and special touch of whimsy to your veggie garden.
