5 Styling Tricks To Make Your Patio Feel Bigger

One of the greatest joys of the season is moving life outdoors. If your patio is small, don’t let that pinch your style. Patio living can still be your favorite go-to destination at home.

Here are a 5 small-space décor ideas for personalizing your outdoor patio or porch.

1. PLAY WITH SCALE

Don’t be shy about bringing in one or two big statement pieces. Lots of little things in a small space can make the area feel cluttered, so stick to a few larger pieces for comfort. Instead of having four small chairs on your patio, bring in two larger chairs with big colorful pillows.

Think about creating contrast and intrigue in your space.  If you have room for a table, place a large herb garden on your table as the centerpiece. Adding a container garden to your small space is a way to enjoy the benefits of gardening in a way that fits your small space.

2. ADD A RUG OR A MIRROR

Find a rug that covers almost your entire patio and don’t be afraid to play with bold patterns and colors. Larger size rugs will anchor the space, and you can style the entire patio around this one piece.

Then, the biggest small space tip of all time: bring on the reflections. Mirrors are one of the best ways to make your tiny space feel open. Plus, they reflect any and all light available back into the space.

3. PAINT WALLS WHITE — OR A VERY LIGHT COLOR

Keeping your walls and floor as light is a good idea if you have a tiny space. This will help highlight the pieces you love, but will also add light to brighten up your space. Like mirrors, this also reflects the sunlight back into your space and keeps your space cozy, but bright. One of our favorite touches is to paint your cement patio floor white — you will be delighted with how it brings your space together.

4. MULTI-PURPOSE YOUR SPACE

If your small patio is also home to your grill, your best option is to get creative and make the space multi-purpose. For example, add a high-top bar table and two chairs to your porch and turn your patio into a small outdoor kitchen. The high bar table with two chairs is the ideal place to enjoy a beverage while grilling your favorite fish.

5. LET YOUR GARDENS GROW

Add container gardens of your favorite herbs and seasonal veggies, it can turn any outdoor space into your own family farm. It’ll keep your small space personal and beautiful.

PRO TIP: Keep your containers uniform. Too many different containers can make space feel cluttered. By keeping containers simple, you’ll allow the green, luscious plants be the art of the space — not the container.
