Plant What You Want to Grow

Last week, our Gardenuity team hosted a wellness workshop with Mattamy Homes.

Before we began planting, we asked each participant to pause and think about one thing they wanted to see grow in their life during the coming season.

Not something they wanted to accomplish or cross off a list. Something they wanted to grow.

They wrote their words on the dry-erase board built into each planter. As I looked around the room, I saw words like confidence, patience, joy, balance, courage, connection, and peace.

It struck me how powerful it can be to name what we need.

We spend so much of our time responding to what is urgent—answering emails, managing calendars, meeting deadlines, and caring for the people who rely on us. We measure our days by what we finished.

But growth rarely happens because we checked a box.

It happens because we gave something our attention.

What Are You Tending?

A garden provides a visible reminder that what we tend grows.

It doesn’t happen all at once. It happens through small, repeated acts of care: checking the soil, turning a plant toward the light, giving it water, noticing what has changed, and adjusting when something isn’t working.

The things we want to grow in our lives often require the same kind of care.

Confidence grows when we keep showing up.

Connection grows when we make time for one another.

Courage grows each time we take the next step before we feel completely ready.

Joy grows when we notice it.

And peace often begins with giving ourselves permission to pause.

Write It Down

There is something meaningful about taking a word out of your head and placing it somewhere you can see it.

A word can become an intention. An intention can shape a small daily choice. And those small choices, tended consistently, can begin to change a season.

That is why I love the idea of writing a word on a planter, plant stake, sticky note, mirror, or the corner of a calendar. Place it somewhere it can gently call you back to what matters when the day becomes loud.

Your word does not need to be impressive. It only needs to be honest.

Growth Is Not Always Obvious

One of the most important things a garden teaches us is that growth can be happening before we can see it.

Roots develop beneath the soil. Seeds open in the dark. A plant can appear still while it is gathering everything it needs for what comes next.

The same is true for us.

We may not always have visible proof that our patience is growing, that our work is making a difference, or that a difficult season is preparing us for something new. But that does not mean nothing is happening.

Sometimes the most important growth is taking place beneath the surface.

What Do You Want to Grow?

As we move toward a new season, I invite you to choose one word.

Not a goal you need to achieve. Not another demand to place on yourself. Simply something you would like to tend with a little more intention.

Write it down. Put it somewhere you will see it. And each time you care for your garden, let it remind you to care for that part of yourself, too.

My word is presence.

The season ahead will be full—Madison’s wedding, fall planting, spring trials, holiday deliveries, and so many moments I have anticipated for a very long time. I know how easy it would be to experience each one while already thinking about what comes next.

I don’t want to simply move through this season. I want to be present for it.

I want to notice the people, the progress, the beauty, and even the messy moments. I want to remember that a full life isn’t only something to manage. It is something to experience.

What will you plant?

From where I’m growing,
Donna
