Disability Pride Month 2023

Disability Pride Month is a significant annual celebration that aims to promote self-acceptance, raise awareness, and empower individuals with disabilities. This month-long observance serves as a platform to recognize the achievements, contributions, and unique experiences of people with disabilities.

This celebration holds immense importance at Gardenity, as CEO and Co-founder has a daughter with special needs, as well as our Channel Sales Associate, who has a daughter with Down syndrome. Furthermore, some of our employees who work in the shipment department are individuals with Down syndrome or other disabilities.

Gardenuity could not be more of an advocate in the journey toward creating an inclusive and equitable society. Let’s dive into why this is the month and these people should be celebrated all year long.

What is Disability Pride Month?

Disability Pride Month is a commemorative period dedicated to honoring and celebrating the disability community. It is an opportunity to recognize the rich diversity and talents of individuals with disabilities while challenging societal barriers and promoting a more inclusive world. The month encourages individuals to embrace their disabilities and promotes the idea that disability is a natural part of the human experience.

The new Disability Pride flag was redesigned in 2021 by Ann Magill.

During Disability Pride Month, various events, activities, and initiatives are organized to foster pride, unity, and empowerment among people with disabilities. It provides a platform for sharing stories, promoting self-advocacy, and highlighting the achievements and talents of individuals who have overcome challenges and made significant contributions to society.

When is Disability Pride Month?

Disability Pride Month is always observed in July, coinciding with the anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), which was signed into law on July 26, 1990. The ADA is a landmark legislation in the United States that prohibits discrimination against individuals with disabilities and ensures equal rights and opportunities in various domains of life, including employment, transportation, public accommodations, and telecommunications.

Every human on the planet deserves equality, empathy, and understanding. At Gardenuity, we believe that individuals with disabilities have the inherent right to be accepted and included as valued and equal members of the community.

For far too long, people with special needs and disabilities have been disregarded, outcasted, and forgotten by society. We believe in the power and importance of people with disabilities and believe in the importance of supporting individuals with all sorts of capabilities and challenges to uplift and inspire.

Gardenuity believes in putting our money where our mouth is. As we are made up of mothers who have children with special needs, we believe in supporting these kids to help them become productive, functional adults. Little children with special needs receive much attention, support, and resources throughout their adolescence. However, unfortunately, when these children grow up to become adults, they are often left in the dust, forgotten, and uncared for.

This is why we employ individuals with special needs, provide them with a sense of purpose, and lift them up through fulfilling work. All anyone wants (special needs or not) is to feel they belong. We hope to instill that in the people we employ, one garden at a time.

Why is Disability Pride Month Important?

  • Promoting Self-Acceptance and Empowerment: Disability Pride Month plays a pivotal role in promoting self-acceptance and empowering individuals with disabilities. It encourages people to embrace their disabilities as an integral part of their identity, fostering a sense of pride and self-worth. By celebrating their unique experiences and abilities, individuals are empowered to advocate for themselves, assert their rights, and challenge societal prejudices.
  • Challenging Stigma and Misconceptions: Societal stigma and misconceptions surrounding disabilities persist, leading to discrimination, exclusion, and marginalization of individuals with disabilities. Disability Pride Month provides an opportunity to challenge these stereotypes, reshape public perception, and educate communities about the diverse experiences and capabilities of people with disabilities. By fostering a culture of understanding and acceptance, it aims to dismantle societal barriers and promote inclusion.
  • Celebrating Achievements and Contributions: Disability Pride Month celebrates the achievements and contributions of individuals with disabilities in various spheres of life, including arts, sciences, sports, activism, education, and professional careers. It highlights the talents, resilience, and accomplishments of individuals who have defied the odds and made significant strides in their respective fields. By recognizing these achievements, Disability Pride Month challenges the notion that disability is a barrier to success and fosters a culture of appreciation and respect.
  • Advocacy for Accessibility and Equal Rights: One of the core objectives of Disability Pride Month is to advocate for accessibility and equal rights for individuals with disabilities. It raises awareness about the importance of inclusive environments, accessible infrastructure, and accommodations that enable full participation and equal opportunities for people with disabilities. This advocacy extends to areas such as education, employment, healthcare, transportation, technology, and the arts, among others.
  • Building Community and Allies: Disability Pride Month serves as a unifying force for the disability community, creating opportunities for individuals with disabilities to connect, share experiences, and build a supportive network. It encourages the formation of alliances with allies and advocates committed to advancing the rights and well-being of individuals with disabilities. By fostering a sense of community, Disability Pride Month strengthens the collective voice and mobilizes efforts for positive change.

As we celebrate Disability Pride Month in 2023, let us stand together in solidarity, embrace diversity, and work towards building a world where everyone, regardless of their abilities, is valued, respected, and empowered to thrive.
